Statistics Canada’s advance estimate of sales in the manufacturing sector for January shows the year started off on the right foot.

The advance results indicate that total manufacturing sales rose 0.4% in January, Statistics Canada reports. The largest increases were in the transportation equipment as well as machinery subsectors.

This flash estimate is a special product published by Statistics Canada to provide Canadians with timely information on the manufacturing sector. The official estimate of manufacturing sales for the month of January, which will be based on a more complete set of survey and administrative data, is scheduled for release on March 14.

This estimate was calculated based on a weighted response rate of 69.1%. The average final response rate for the survey over the previous 12 months has been 94.4%. As Statistics Canada continues to collect data for the January reference month, this early indicator is subject to a higher revision rate than our regular monthly release.

The percentage change is calculated using seasonally adjusted data in current dollars.
