Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the manufacturing sector for May. Advance results from Statistics Canada’s Monthly Survey of Manufacturing indicate that total manufacturing sales increased 0.2% in May.

The largest increases were in the aerospace product and parts industry group.

If the advance estimate proves accurate, it would be second consecutive month of manufacturing sales growth. Following a 1.8% decline in March, total manufacturing sales increased 1.1% to $70.8 billion in April, on higher sales in 12 of 21 subsectors.

This estimate was calculated based on a weighted response rate of 67.6%. The average final response rate for the survey over the previous 12 months has been 94.5%. As Statistics Canada continues to collect data for the May reference month, this early indicator is subject to a higher revision rate than its regular monthly release.

The official estimate of manufacturing sales for the month of May, which will be based on a more complete set of survey and administrative data, is scheduled for release on July 15.
