The Office of Public Safety (OPS), a division of the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) Welding Specialist Mark (WSM), launched in March 2014, has been steadily growing and to date has acquired 190 members.

Developed for welding professionals, the program allows individuals to idenfity themselves as those with recognized knowledge of welding.

“One of the most significant mandates of the OPS is to ensure that public safety is front of mind. With the WSM we are able to identify individuals based on their knowledge of welding fundamentals and CSA welding standards,” said Cristian Zanfir, assistant manager standards. “We are able to provide welding specialists with a visible identifier that recognizes their achievements and dedication to excellence in welding standards knowledge and their commitment to upholding public safety as it is related to welded structures.”

The program will generate awareness about the relationship between welding professionals and their knowledge of  Building Codes at the National and Provincial levels, and CSA design and product standards. The WSM program will create a better understanding of CSA welding certification programs available in Canada and amalgamate welding specialists with earned recognition.

Candidates must apply online and meet eligibility requirements to be considered for the program. The program does not have any fees. Upon successful completion of the examination process, candidates will be provided with a unique QualityMark number and access to the Mark logo. Other privileges include access to advertising, support, and program developed to showcase their commitment to public safety and the CSA welding standards.

For more than 65 years, the OPS has been an advocate for public safety regarding Canadian welders and welding companies. The OPS works to ensure the welding industry acts in compliance with building codes and standards. OPS has also created the Weld QualityMark, a program that recognizes CWB Certified companies. By providing support for the high welding standards of Canada, the OPS is one of the most fundamental departments of the CWB.
