The global welding industry continues to post modest growth despite the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic and is projected to grow from $20.99 billion in 2021 to $28.66 billion by 2028, according to CWB Group’s latest Welding Industry Report.

The global welding industry has grown to make up approximately 2% of the world’s GDP and it employs around 3 million people around the world.

Canada has also seen steady growth in various aspects of the welding industry, the CWB report states. There are approximately 80,000 welders currently employed in Canada with an employment rate of 95.6% in 2021. But growth in the nation’s welding ranks is coming from women whose numbers grew by 4,200 or 16.7% from 2020 to 2021. In comparison, the number of male welders dropped by 9.2% during the same time period, down to 76, 800.

The majority of welders in 2021 were located in Ontario (22,700) and the Prairies (22,300).

Despite the high number of welders, however, there is a continuous ongoing labour shortage. For welders and related machine operators over the period of 2019- 2028, new job openings are expected to total 23,200 arising from expansion demand and replacement demand, according to the report.

Also 25,100 new job seekers arising from graduates, immigration and mobility are expected to be available to fill them.
