Capacity utilization rate increases for manufacturing

Capacity utilization for Canadian fabricators of metal products underperformed manufacturing’s overall capacity utilization rate in November, the latest Statistics Canada records show. PHOTO courtesy TRUMPF.

The capacity utilization rate for the Canadian manufacturing sector increased from 77.6% in October to 79.5% in November, on higher production.

However, capacity utilization for Canadian fabricators of metal products underperformed manufacturing’s overall capacity utilization rate for the month, the latest Statistics Canada records show. Capacity utilization for Canadian metal product fabricators was 78.1% in November, a 0.1% drop from the previous month.

Capacity utilization for Canadian fabricators of metal products in November was also 1.7% down from November of 2022.

On a more positive note, key customer segments for metal fabricators saw their capacity utilization increase in November. Durable goods manufacturers saw their capacity utilization increase 1.7% to 81.3%  while manufacturers of transportation equipment experienced a 4.4% jump to a capacity utilization jump 87.8% for the month.
