Who are the globe’s industrial robot leaders?

The phenomenal growth in robotics is not equally shared across the globe's manufacturing economies. While North America has experienced rapid robotics growth, it trails far behind Asian economies. PHOTO courtesy Lincoln Electric. 

There were 553,052 industrial robots installed in factories around the world in 2022, according to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). Compared to 517,385 industrial robots installed in 2021, that marked a year-over-year growth rate of 5% and IFR has forecasted 600,000 units of industrial robots to be installed worldwide in 2024, with a growth rate of 7%.

“The implications are immense, and the emerging challenges for governments and policy makers are equally daunting in their scale,” comments Adrian Cooper, CEO and chief economist of Oxford Economics in the report “How Robots Change the World.”

This growth in robotics, however, is not equally shared across the globe’s manufacturing economies. Asia is by the far the largest investor in in robotics technology with 73% of all new industrial robots deployed in 2022 installed in Asia. The Americas (15%) and Europe (10%) trailed far behind in robot installations for 2022.

Insider Monkey, an investing website, recently published the list of 13 most advanced countries in robotics. Its rankings were based on the robot density in the respective countries’ workforce and it used robot density data by country from the World Robotics Report 2023 published by the International Federation of Robotics. Canada did not make the list.

Included below are the 13 most advanced nations in robotics, as listed by Insider Monkey:

13. The Netherlands: Robot Density in Workforce: 248 robot units per 10,000 employees

12. Denmark: Robot Density in Workforce: 274 robot units per 10,000 employees

11. Slovenia: Robot Density in Workforce: 284 robot units per 10,000 employees

10. United States: Robot Density in Workforce: 285 robot units per 10,000 employees

9. Taiwan: Robot Density in Workforce: 292 robot units per 10,000 employees

8. Switzerland: Robot Density in Workforce: 296 robot units per 10,000 employees

7. Hong Kong: Robot Density in Workforce: 333 robot units per 10,000 employees

6. Sweden: Robot Density in Workforce: 343 robot units per 10,000 employees

5. China: Robot Density in Workforce: 392 robot units per 10,000 employees

4. Japan: Robot Density in Workforce: 397 robot units per 10,000 employees

3. Germany: Robot Density in Workforce: 415 robot units per 10,000 employees

2. Singapore: Robot Density in Workforce: 730 robot units per 10,000 employees

1. South Korea: Robot Density in Workforce: 1,012 robot units per 10,000 employees
