KUKA Robotics has highlighted its Airskin safety technology.
Airskin enables industrial robots to work as cobots in close proximity with human operators, KUKA says.
Airskin slows a robot’s motion as a human approaches or stops that motion if the individual comes closer or touches the robot. The system consists of air cushions specially adapted to a robot, in which internal cushion pressure is constantly monitored. If contact occurs, the air cushion’s internal pressure changes as the cushion is compressed, and this actuates the Airskin.
Airskin enables safe collaboration between robots and humans, even with payloads of several 100 kg. KUKA’s robot controller and the company’s KUKA.SafeOperation technology package provide smooth interaction between all components of the Airskin system.
