Industrial automation giant ABB has been named a winner in the 2020 RBR50 Robotics Innovation Awards by Robotics Business Review.

The award in the Business & Management Innovation category recognizes the opening of the ABB global healthcare research hub at the Texas Medical Center, in Houston, Texas.

Check out the Awards program here.

The centre, ABB’s first dedicated to healthcare research, opened in October 2019 and is leading the way by using ABB’s collaborative robots (cobots) to aid development of non-surgical medical robotics systems, logistics and next-generation automated laboratory technologies.

A team of 20 experts from ABB Robotics works in the research facility, which includes an automation laboratory and robot training facilities, as well as meeting spaces.

ABB has identified long-term growth opportunityies by investing in innovation for underserved robotics sectors, and its healthcare research center could advance ABB’s collaborative robotics business by developing new automation expertise specific to these markets.

Many highly skilled medical workers also spend a large part of their days doing repetitive and low-value tasks. ABB said its analysis showed that repetitive tasks could be completed in half the time by using automation compared with current manual processes.

ABB estimates that by 2025, more than 60,000 non-surgical medical robots will be working in hospitals.
