Zeiss has announced that it is acquiring GOM, a provider of hardware and software for automated 3D coordinate measuring technology.

With the acquisition, Zeiss is adding to the strength of the industrial metrology and quality assurance portfolio of its Industrial Quality & Research segment. In particular, Zeiss plans to leverage the acquisition to develop its technological position in the area of optical digitization systems by combining existing products and solutions and developing joint innovations in the future.

“Combining the Zeiss product portfolio with the optical 3D measuring technology from GOM has the potential to create new opportunities and expand market access for Industrial Quality & Research,” Zeiss said in announcing the acquisition. “GOM offers cutting-edge solutions for surface digitization, which will strengthen ZEISS in this area.”

Both companies have shown strong market growth in recent years, Zeiss says. GOM will become part of the ZEISS Industrial Quality & Research segment. The legal form of the GOM companies in Germany and abroad will remain unchanged. Cooperation with global sales partners will continue.

The transaction is due to be finalized in the first half of 2019, subject to regulatory approval. Zeiss and GOM have not disclosed financial details.
