Mazak’s Orbitec 20 is a unique machine originally developed as a customized solution for a customer application.
The machine is designed to turn large odd-shaped parts that are not typically feasible with normal turning applications. This multi-tasking machine can machine large valves requiring turning, threading, tapered boring and phonographic faciing.
The new machine is an example of the future direction in machine tool design for Mazak, says Chuck Birkle, marketing vice president of Mazak’s Cybertec Division, who spoke at the recent T3 event the company held at is Florence, KY, headquarters and North American manufacturing facility.
“In the future we will build machines with broader appeal and examples include our QTN 450 multi-tasking machine and our Orbitec 20, a unique machine designed for unusually shaped parts. This new machine has already been sold to customers around the world, including manufacturers in Tunisia, Brazil and Mexico.”
At the heart of the multi-tasking machine is a unique headstock spindle design capable of turning diameters of 508 mm (20 in.) on large, odd-shaped and complex parts that fit into a cylinder up to 1,050 mm (41.34 in.) in diameter and 1,300 mm (51.18 in.) in height. An optional two-pallet changer provides quick and easy setups and increases throughput for large valve body machining. Equipped with a 40 hp, 600 rpm integrated spindle motor and axis travels of 280 mm (11.2 in.) for the X axis, 600 mm (23.62 in.) for U axis, 600 mm (23.62 in.) for V axis and 1,230 mm (48.43 in.) for Z axis, the Orbitec machines part diameters up to 20 in. and allows for a variety of valve features, including the facing of flange surfaces, conical boring of taper holes, face milling and endmilling, to be done in single setups.
