The Ontario government is pumping $1.3 million into skills training to help the Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium (EMC) develop workers in London and Ottawa for new opportunities in the manufacturing sector.
This project is being delivered in partnership with manufacturing employers and was announced by Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development and JP Giroux, president of the EMC.
“Individuals, families and workers across Ontario have struggled during the pandemic, and our government is helping them pursue new careers in manufacturing,” said McNaughton. “Training and retraining are essential for our economic recovery. By investing in people, we are helping business-owners find the skilled workers they need to grow and succeed. This is truly a win-win.”
This training helps manufacturing workers improve their skills in fields like problem solving, critical thinking and teamwork. As part of its project, EMC has launched training partnerships with 29 employers to train 70 existing workers and create 30 new career opportunities for job seekers.
The training provides and improves essential soft skills that improve productivity in the workplace and increase the effectiveness of supervisors. New training cohorts are expected to start by late January 2021.
In addition to training job seekers in Ottawa and London, this initiative includes projects for existing workers in Blenheim, Ingersoll, Strathroy, Tillsonburg, St. Thomas, Wheatley, Thorndale and Salford.
