Winnipeg based bus maker New Flyer Canada has been awarded a contract to build zero-emission buses for two Quebec municipal transit agencies.
The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and the Société de transport de Laval (STL) have awarded New Flyer a contract for 40 of the company’s forty-foot battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE heavy-duty transit buses. The order is supported by funding from provincial and federal governments. It includes 10 buses for STL and 30 buses for STM, making it the largest ever Canadian battery-electric bus procurement to date.
The notice to proceed for the pilot bus is expected October 31 and the notice to proceed for the production buses is expected following the nine month review of the pilot bus, the company says.
STL and STM are currently running battery-electric bus pilot programs. STL will buy only electric buses as of 2023, with STM scheduled to follow suit in 2025.
Other North American cities currently using the Xcelsior CHARGE include Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Portland and Palm Springs.
New Flyer Canada, the Canadian subsidiary of NFI Group Inc., is the largest transit bus and motor coach manufacturer and parts distributor in North America.
