A high school in St. John, New Brunswick is home to a groundbreaking welding camp for young newcomers to Canada.
Funded by the Canadian Welding Bureau, the “Mind over Metal” camp is giving some 20 new Canadians between the ages of 11 and 17 their first experience with welding. Some of the students are young women – many from countries where skilled trades aren’t an option for women. The school will also help to address a shortage of sufficiently skilled welders in Canada that is expected to become acute by 2020.
