National Steel Car, a Hamilton, Ont.-based manufacturer of rail cars and rail car parts, has voluntarily suspended operations because of a COVID-19 outbreak at its factory.
“We have become aware that several members of our team have tested positive for COVID-19. Out of an abundance of caution and in consultation with Public Health Hamilton, we have decided to temporarily suspend our manufacturing operations,” the company said in a statement on its Facebook page, adding that the suspension of manufacturing operations began April 23 and will continue for two weeks.
The company says all administrative and engineering tasks will continue at the facility with strict protocols to maintain safety.
Hamilton Public Health says that as of April 23, the outbreak at the facility totaled 18 cases and that the shutdown was “…a necessary measure to get this outbreak under control.” The agency added that Hamilton’s COVID-19 situation “…is concerning, with increased transmission, reduced hospital capacity and a rise in ICU admissions.”
