Standard Machine & Manufacturing in Stoney Creek, ON, is a custom precision machining shop that works hard to set itself apart in a competitive market.
The 13,000 sq ft shop houses a variety of manual and CNC lathes, mills and drills, including its newest machine, a CNC horizontal boring mill.
When the shop ran into a challenge—to improve the speed and quality of drilled holes in four-inch plate on its CAT 40 tapered spindle light-duty CNC mill—Greg Nichols, operations manager, sent out for quotes to cutting suppliers. The company selected Tungaloy’s Tung-Drill-Twisted drills.
“We have a lot of holes to drill in four-inch plate and drilling them with a light duty machine would be difficult. We ran the Tungaloy drills at over 1150 surface feet and you could barely hear them drilling. Tungaloy has made some significant improvements in performance—I have a history with the older generation drills—they’re faster and more cost effective; we barely used any corners on the inserts. It took about 14 seconds to drill each hole and with other tooling it would have taken 30 to 40 seconds per hole.”
Another benefit with using the new drills is that Standard was able to run its CAT 40 spindle at about a 70 per cent. “We usually run over 90 per cent, which is risky.”
Standard purchased the Tung-Drill Twisted drills this past spring and Nichols says the company is happy with the performance. “We had another part with 3700 holes in quarter inch-thick plate and we ran the drills at 1150 surface feet; this speed is unheard of in this application—and we didn’t hear the drilling. We’ve ordered the drill in a couple of sizes. It works very well in high volume applications.”
The Tung-Drill-Twisted starts with two large diameter holes. The steel is heated and the drill is twisted. This process maximizes the chip gullet and the coolant flow. The coolant holes are located on the face, right at the point of engagement. The drill bodies are nickel-plated to extend drill body life and assist in chip evacuation.
The drill is capable of running at high penetration rates while consuming less horsepower and providing a better quality hole. Designed with four cutting edges, two of them are used for centre cutting and two are for periphery cutting. The periphery insert chipbreaker design is a deep formed chip groove that performs free cutting action and effective chipbreaking. The chipbreaker design on the centre inserts has a shallow chip groove to prevent chips from packing. Both chipbreakers are on only one insert; the insert cannot be put into the wrong pocket. The inserts are treated with Tungaloy’s Premium Tec, characterized by a super smooth surface to prevent chip adhesion, reduce drag and extend tool life.
