The HCN-5000 NEO Horizontal Machining Centers are the newest additions to Mazak’s line of horizontal machines.
Mazak used the advanced manufacturing technology action area at its recent DISCOVER 2023 to focus on its two new NEO Series of machines, which the company has evolved with “next-generation” type features.
Mazak says the VARIAXIS NEO Series of 5-axis machining centers delivers multiple-surface simultaneous machining capability in a fast, compact machine.

The VARIAXIS NEO i-800 vertical machining centre showcased is now equipped with a powerful CNC to provide faster machining cycle times, expanded workpiece capacities and more automation options. The MAZATROL Smooth AI CN includes SMOOTH Machining Configuration (SMC) for process optimization with real-time operator control of a wide range of cutting parameters. The machine’s Ai Thermal Shield supports stable machining accuracy through smart heat-displacement compensation, while SMOOTH Project Manager Gateway synchronizes machining data throughout a shop, and manages tool data, fixtures, coordinate system, parameters, and workpiece 3D models to execute machining programs.
The HCN-5000 NEO Horizontal Machining Centers are the newest additions to Mazak’s line of horizontal machines and were also part of the advanced manufacturing technology area exhibits. Both combine advanced technology with high performance and high productivity to maximize output while decreasing energy consumption, Mazak says.

The HCN-4000 NEO Horizontal Machining Center is designed with a spacious work envelope, generous pallet size, fast rapid traverse rate and five rigid spindle options. For unattended high production, the automation-ready machine accepts an optional 6-pallet charger, PALLETECH or MULTI PALLET POOL (MPP) system and external robot. A standard 40-tool magazine keeps the machine supplied during extended machining, with larger capacity options available, including 60, 80, 120 or 160-tool magazines, or a TOOL HIVE with 240 or 348 tools.
Also featured in the advanced manufacturing action area was the VC-500A/5X HWD HYBRID Multi-Tasking machine, which incorporates joining and additive technologies.
All Mazak machines are powered by MAZATROL Smooth CNCs. All Mazak MAZATROL Smooth Controls feature Mazak’s ultra-high speed machining software, which allows for both conversational and G-Code EIA/ISO programming.
The advanced manufacturing technology action area was one of four action areas of live machine tool demonstrations and automation solutions included at the event hosted at Mazak’s Florence, Ky, North American headquarters. With more than 2,000 visitors from the U.S., Canada, and six other nations Mazak believes it’s the largest privately held event in North America.
