Conestoga College, based in Kitchener, ON, will implement and lead a welding pre-apprenticeship training program that will be delivered across the country.
Kitchener Today reports that the college has secured nearly $7 million in funding from Ottawa’s new federal Skilled Trades Awareness and Readiness program to promote jobs in the skilled trades. With the funding, Conestoga will develop and lead a national welding pre-apprenticeship training program that will be delivered through partner institutions across Canada.
“The new Skilled Trades Awareness and Readiness program will equip Canadians from key groups with the foundational skills, knowledge and experience they need to get trained and start well-paying careers in the skilled trades,” said Kitchener South-Hespeler MP Marwan Tabbara in a news release. “By creating a skilled, diverse and inclusive workforce, our government is strengthening the middle class and creating a more prosperous country.”
Ottawa estimates the Skilled Trades Awareness and Readiness program will benefit some 5000 Canadians over the next four to five years.
