Chinese electric vehicle builder BYD has opened a new plant in Ontario.
BYD’s first Canadian facility, the new plant will initially focus on building buses for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), reports the Globe and Mail.
BYD (the letters stand for “Build Your Dreams”) says the TTC has ordered 10 electric buses with an option for 30 more, which will be built at the 45,000 sq. ft. plant in Newmarket, 25 miles north of Toronto.
Last year BYD put previously announced plans to open an electric truck plant in Canada on hold, but these could still be revived if a business case can be made.
BYD is the largest electrified vehicle maker in China, and is backed by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. It already has a plant in California, which launched in 2013 with 100 workers and now employs 750.
