The Haas Demo Day in Toronto at Sirco Machinery was one of many across North America held on October 10. The events are popular with customers because of the many live machining demonstrations and the ability to speak with a number of ancillary suppliers of cutting tools, workholding, toolholding, CAD/CAM software and metalworking fluids.

The one-day event drew manufacturers from across Southern Ontario, including Manfred Iljas, owner of Novy Manufacturing & Assembly Inc. based in

Waterloo, ON.  The 33 year-old custom machine shop houses six Haas CNCs and isinterested in more machinery. One focus for the shop is developing innovative concepts for customers, such as a hard anodized aluminum rope positioning tool for arborists.

"We only buy Haas machines because once you have several from the same machine tool builder it is difficult to introduce new machines and software from another supplier and our Haas machines have been quite good; we have had no problems, so need to change."

Speedox Custom Machining is a London, ON machine shop that houses primarily Haas CNC machines, such as the VF2s. Spyros Chaidemenos is the owner and stopped by the Haas Demo Day to see newer machines that he's interested in purchasing for his shop.

"We focus on lower volume production components. Our mission is to implement modern day machine tools and technologies to machine parts accurately and more efficiently."

Chaidemenos, who opened his machine shop when he was 22 years old, grew up in the machine tool business--his father, uncle and cousins have all run machine shops--and says he's focused on growing his shop by adding the right machine tool technology.
