Canadian machine tool distributor gets additive machine line

Specialty grinding machinery and equipment distributor Machine Tool Systems, Toronto, ON, is getting into the additive manufacturing business with the EOS line of machines for metals and plastics. The distributor will represent EOS in Ontario and Quebec.
EOS manufactures additive manufacturing machines based on the Direct Metal Laser-Sintering (DMLS) process, which John Manley, president of Machine Tool Systems, says offers "perfect homogeneity and virtually 0 per cent porosity compared to other processes and that can have significant porosity. So there are zero voids and it's billet quality material."

Manley says he's providing a turnkey solution for manufacturers: the machine, the software and "most importantly" the powdered material.
"There have been discussions about additive manufacturing taking away from metalworking but I believe it's going to complement, not take away; no more than hard turning supposedly took away from grinding. It didn't and that's why I have machines that perform a combination of hard turning and grinding."

He adds that he's offering customers the ability to manufacture a "net shape off the machine that can go to a secondary process like grinding or polishing.
EOS is a German manufacturer with North American headquarters in Novi, MI.
