Advance results from Statistics Canada’s Monthly Survey of Manufacturing indicate that total manufacturing sales rose 0.7% in February.

If the estimate proves accurate that would mean manufacturing has started off the new year with two straight months of growth.

Manufacturing sales had risen 0.2% to $71.1 billion in January, on higher sales in 11 of the 21 subsectors, led by the transportation equipment (+4.3%) sector. Sales in constant dollars had also risen 1.1% in January, while the Industrial Product Price Index edged down 0.1%.

The February estimate was calculated based on a weighted response rate of 64.8%. The average final response rate for the survey over the previous 12 months was 94.3%. As Statistics Canada continues to collect data for the February reference month, this early indicator is subject to a higher revision rate than our regular monthly release.
