Capacity utilization rate for Canadian manufacturing increases

Capacity utilization is up for Canadian manufacturing but fabricated metal manufacturing is not keeping pace with the national average. PHOTO courtesy Flow.

The capacity utilization rate (not seasonally adjusted) for Canadian manufacturing sector increased from 75.1% in December to 77.1% in January, mainly on higher production.

Fabricated metal manufacturing was considerably off that pace, however, registering a capacity utilization rate in January of 71.7%, which was 3.6% lower than at the same point a year ago. It is though a 1.3% improvement from December.

Primary metal manufacturing is experiencing the opposite trend at the moment. Its 76.5% capacity utilization rate in January was 0.6% higher than at the same point a year ago but a 0.8% decline from December.
