A roadmap for Ontario regional industry councils

In frequent conversations with manufacturers, a common theme comes up time and again – the persistent challenge of attracting and keeping qualified workers in manufacturing (including skilled trades).

To address this issue, Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) piloted a Regional Industry Council in Southwestern Ontario to improve the alignment of workforce development with manufacturers’ needs. This platform brought together manufacturers, local school representatives, workforce development advocates, and government observers to explore solutions.

From discussions with participants, a survey of the workforce literature and recent data, CME released its 2024 Manufacturing Workforce Report.

The report recommends a series of strategic interventions, including:

  1. Investing in technology training to build a technologically agile workforce.
  2. Promoting green collar jobs and fostering innovation in low-carbon manufacturing.
  3. Engaging students and young professionals through initiatives such as FIRST Robotics competitions and apprenticeship programs.
  4. Enhancing collaboration between industry, academia, and government to align workforce development initiatives with market-driven outcomes.
