When your band saw blade breaks prematurely, the cause should be identified immediately to prevent a repeat occurrence. Here are the 7 most common reasons and recommended actions:

1. Incorrect Usage of the Band Saw: Misusing the band saw through cutting material sizes outside of the manufacturer’s specification, material not appropriate for the type of saw you have, and many other “misuses”, can put undue stress on the blade, leading to premature breakage. Ensure you know your saw’s designed capabilities and purpose. Make sure you are utilizing the saw within the manufacturer’s recommended parameters.

2. Blade Break-In Not Done Correctly: Failing to properly break in a new blade can weaken its integrity by creating micro cracks within the tooth tip. These micro cracks can make the blade susceptible to premature breakage. If a proper break-in procedure has not been performed, blade life and performance will be reduced significantly. Take the time to perform the initial blade break-in process. If you need some tips and tricks breaking in a band saw blade, please contact your DoALL Sawing Products Professional.

3.Over-Tensioning the Blade: Excessive tension can cause the blade to snap prematurely. Follow the recommended machine tension settings found in your operator’s manual.

4. Incorrect Blade Tooth Pitch: Using a blade with an unsuitable tooth pitch for the material being cut can accelerate wear and lead to premature breakage or stripping of teeth. Ensure the blade’s tooth pitch is compatible with the material’s cutting requirements. For tooth pitch selection assistance, contact your DoALL Sawing Products Professional

5. Dull Saw Blade: A dull blade not only affects cutting efficiency and the ability to cut squarely, but also increases the risk of breakage due to added friction and fatigue. Pay attention to machine performance metrics, increased cut time, increased amperage draw on the motor, “wavy” surface finish, etc. Make sure to keep an ample stock of band saw blades assuring you won’t experience production delays or work stoppage for your facility.

6. Defective Band Saw Machine: A faulty or improperly maintained band saw machine can contribute to premature blade breakage. Conduct routine inspections and maintenance checks to ensure the machine is in optimal condition. Contact your DoALL Sawing Professional to arrange for an evaluation of your sawing machine to make sure the tool is at optimal performance condition.

7. Poor Quality Blade: Inferior materials, incorrect heat treat, poorly shaped/ground teeth are some of the factors that will result in poor quality blades. These manufacturing defects will result in poor quality parts and/or premature blade breakage. Invest in high-quality blades from DoALL to enhance durability and performance.

Addressing these factors promptly can help prevent premature blade breakage and/or poor cut parts. Simple observation and preventative maintenance measures will help you maximize the efficiency and lifespan of your band saw blades.
