An Alberta aluminum deck manufacturer is investing $15 million to build a new production plant in Saguenay-Lac-Saint Jean, Quebec.

SigmaDek, Calgary, AB, designs and manufactures prefabricated deck components and porcelain deck surfaces.

With an estimated value of over $15 million, the company’s Saguenay project will create some 40 jobs. The Québec government’s participation in the project will take the form of a $1.5-million loan from Investissement Québec.

“Producing 32 per cent of Canada’s total annual aluminum output, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean holds an enviable position,” said Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard. “In Québec, the aluminum industry is made up of over 1,400 companies that process aluminum and nearly 4,000 equipment manufacturers and suppliers. The region will have a leading role in ensuring the success of Québec’s aluminum industry development strategy, which will leverage the province’s many assets, including its expertise, clean energy and network of distinctive businesses.”

“SigmaDek’s initiative is a perfect fit for the strategies pursued by the partners in the aluminum processing niche of excellence, particularly in terms of establishing new businesses and expanding and consolidating businesses already operating in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean,” stated Serge Simard, MNA for Dubuc and Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier for the Saguenay-Lac-Saint Jean region. “In addition to the direct economic spin-offs, the plant’s supplies will be locally sourced, which is bound to generate growth for the regional economy.”

“Aluminum is the metal of the future. It is used in a growing number of products and a host of innovative applications in key sectors of the Québec economy. Its remarkable potential has led to the development of Québec’s aluminium industry development strategy, which will be announced shortly,” said Jacques Daoust, Minister of the Economy, Innovation and Exports.
