Niagara, ON, equipment manufacturer Whiting Equipment Canada Inc. has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to supply salt evaporators and potash crystallizers from VALE for the company’s potash plant in Argentina.

The estimated US $150 to US $300 million  (CDN $152 to CDN $305 million) potash crystallization plant is at the heart of VALE’s US $4.2 billion investment in the project.

Construction is slated to begin December 2012 and be operational by January 2014. Once operational, the plant will increase production of potash by 5 per cent, producing 2.4 million tonnes of potash per year with potential phased-in increases to 4.2 million tpa before 2020. The current world potash market is about 50 million tpa. Canada is the largest producer at 35 per cent and China is the largest consumer at 27 per cent.

“Canadians are world leaders in solution mining and potash processing, says H. Rudi Kroeker, Whiting’s president and CEO. “This is the world’s first new green-field solution mining project of this size in over 40 years. All the process engineering and equipment design was completed at Whiting’s facility in Niagara, Canada.

The project is expected to create approximately 800 jobs in Canada and the US.
