Advance results from Statistics Canada’s Monthly Survey of Manufacturing indicate that total manufacturing sales fell 0.9% in July, the third straight monthly drop.
The largest decreases were in the petroleum, coal product and primary metal industries.
This estimate was calculated based on a weighted response rate of 75.5% of survey respondents. As Statistics Canada continues to collect data for the July reference month, this early indicator could be revised prior to the regular monthly release of the survey’s findings.
Manufacturing sales declined 0.8% in June and 1.1% in May. To place those consecutive monthly drops in manufacturing sales in wider perspective, however, it’s important to note that overall sales rose 5.8% in in the second quarter, the eighth quarterly gain and the third largest gain in dollars on record.
