Five Axis Waterjet Cutting

Business has been so good for Ament Waterjet that the company decided to open a new company, M3 Cut Fab in Maxwell, ON, to focus on more complex parts, says Fred Jones, operations manager for Ament Group. To accommodate complex fabricating, it invested in a Techni Waterjet machine. The 4100 X3 machine is equipped with the company’s patented dual NXT-66 electric servo pump and patented PAC60 five axis bevel and taper control head.

According to Dan Smith, president of Samzach Enterprises Ltd., the distributor for Techni Waterjet, one key reason Ament purchased the machine is because of a low operating cost.

“The heart of every waterjet machine is the pump. Aside from abrasive, it dictates the majority of the operating cost of a waterjet. This is the main reason Ament purchased a Techni machine. Our patented electric servo pump uses 30 to 70 per cent less water, 30 to 70 per cent less electricity, and the lowest cost of operation in pump parts, 30 to 50 per cent less. It also has the shortest rebuild time of ten minutes, is quiet (68dB) and has a small footprint. We have won many awards for the pump, as it’s the greenest pump in the industry. Some companies retrofit it to their existing machines just to take advantage of the savings it can provide.”

One feature Jones likes is the five axis head. According to Smith, “it’s the most accurate beveling head in the industry at +/- 0.1°. The head has the ability to rotate continually without winding up cables and hoses. This means you don’t have to unwind the head every time you cut a beveled part, which saves time and money.”

Another important feature Jones cites is the machine’s ability to run unattended. The machine is equipped with a patented “Tech-Sense” feature that allows the machine to run unattended by monitoring the cutting conditions in the head. Smith says it’s the only machine capable of lights out operation. “Some customers run long cuts over the week-end without the expense of an operator.”
