Hougen Manufacturing has released the HMD2MT Fabricator’s Kit, a new portable magnetic drill kit.
The HMD2MT features the HMD2MT #2 Morse Taper magnetic drill bundled with a number of accessories to give steel fabricators the ability to tackle more jobs with fewer tools.
The new kit combines the HMD2MT magnetic drill along with the 83000 tapping kit, 08821 drill chuck adapter and a ½ in. (12.7 mm) Hougen drill chuck. This allows the operator to drill holes with Hougen annular cutters, drill small through or blind holes with a drill chuck and the ability to tap holes. Other optional #2 Morse Taper accessories can also be used with the drill, such as taper shank drills, reamers, countersinks and more. The HMD2MT mag drill is powered by a two-speed motor with a forward/reverse option for use when tapping holes. A double dovetail slide allows adjustment of the motor assembly to a higher level to accommodate longer tooling or extended depth of cut giving the drill a seven inch stroke. The HMD2MT comes standard with a pilot light to help the operator line up the cutting tool with the hole’s centre location in low light conditions. The addition of a two-stage magnet increases magnetic holding power by 30 per cent when the drill motor is turned on, saving energy and increasing magnet life.
The HMD2MT has additional features: a coolant system; a robust housing design with an ergonomic carrying handle; a spot to hold the hex wrench; reversible feed handles; and a D-ring on the back of the magnet for quickly attaching the safety chain. The drill also includes a carrying case.
The HMD2MT weighs 40 lbs. (18.14 kg), measures 22-5/16 in. H x 7-1/2 in. W x 12-3/4 in. L (56.67 cm H x 19.05 cm W x 32.38 cm L) and provides drilling capacities from 9/16 to 1-5/8 in. (14 to 41 mm) diameter and 2 in. (50 mm) depth of cut (with Hougen annular cutters). Tapping capacity up to 5/8 in. (15.875 mm), reaming up to ¾ in. (19.05 mm) and twist drills up to ¾ in. (19.05 mm). The drill has an electrical rating of 10A and 250/450 RPM motor with reverse.
The HMD2MT incorporates safety features including a no-adjustment safety switch, which shuts down the drill motor if lift of the magnetic base is detected, plus an LED indicator that monitors a sensor and alerts if an unsafe operational condition exists. A two-stage power on switch prevents drill rotation unless the magnet has first been engaged and, in the case of a power interruption, safety circuitry will keep the drill motor off after power is restored until the start button is manually depressed.
