How to find good CNC machinists

If you’re a machine shop in the Greater Toronto Area in search of good CNC machinists, you should attend a breakfast session on Tuesday, April 21, hosted by the Ontario Manufacturing Learning Consortium (OMLC).

OMLC is a partnership between the Canadian Toolng and Machining Association (CTMA), the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME), Ontario Aerospace Council (OAC) and the Organizaiton of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCI), that provides a 26-week program for youth 18-29 with on-the-job training experience in CNC machining. Participating machine shops receive $8,000 cash payment for each successful trainee to support training activities. The participating youth-in-training receive classroom training (three weeks) at the start to give them the basics to be workplace-ready. OMLC also provides training guidelines to assist machine shops in teaching the youth selected (23 weeks on your shop floor).

As part of the program, participating machine shops agree to hire and train one or more youth for approximately 26 weeks and pay a participation fee of $1,500 (for participation organization members) for the first trainee, and pay a recruiting, screening and classroom training fee of $3,500 for each additional trainee.

OMLC has screened candidates who will be available to machine shop owners to interview at the April 21 information session. The event takes place from 7:30 to 9:00 am at The Vue, located at 195 Galaxy Blvd., Toronto, near Pearson International Airport.

There’s no cost to attend, but pre-registration is required. Contact Diane de Jong at CME to register, or telephone her at 905 672 3466 x 3260.
