$100 million for manufacturing: Harper election promise

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says if the Conservatives are re-elected, the government will create a $100 million Manufacturing Technology Demonstration Fund to support projects in advanced manufacturing. Harper’s election promise is the latest in a slew of promises from federal party leaders about how they plan to support manufacturing in Canada if their respective governments are elected.

 The funding, which, according to a report by CBC won’t be accessible until 2017-2018, will be available over five years as grants for major projects in automotive, information and communication technology, steel, aluminum and machinery and equipment.

Earlier in the month, Liberal leader Justin Trudean stated his party, if elected, would give $500 million to the provinces for skilled trades training and commit more than $120 billion for infrastructure projects across the country.

NDP leader Tom Muclair stated his party would provide up to $100 million a year to create more than 40,000 jobs, paid internships and co-op plaements for youth over four years, commit $90 million for the automotive supplier innovation program over five years, and create a $160-million, four-year fund to help SME aerospace companies adopt new technology and increase production.

The Conservative Party has also promied to establish a not-for-profit agency to help develop new products and technology for manufacturing commiting $30 million a year for five years. Harper has also stated his government would set up a new trade promotion office to help attract new business for exporters, paid for by re-allocating other government resources. For skills training, the Conservative government has stated it will increase the apprenticeship job creation tax credit to foster skilled trades, to a maximu of $2.500 and extend it to inlude third and fourth years of eligible training.
