The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has announced the winners of its 2021 Additive Manufacturing Community Awards, and Ontario’s University of Waterloo is among the recipients.
The Waterloo team of Sagar Patel and Martine McGregor, backed by faculty advisors Mihaela Vlasea and Stewart McLachlin, have won SME’s 2021 Digital Manufacturing Challenge for their project entitled “Rapid Deployment of Patient-Specific Prosthesis Assemblies in Emergency Medicine.”
“The 2021 Digital Manufacturing Challenge is a call for action to inspire the next generation of engineers,” SME said in making the announcement. “They are challenged to re-think ways to design, create, and utilize infrastructure-level systems that deploy engineering design and manufacturing solutions to strengthen infrastructure in the response, mitigation and/or prevention of such disruptive and devastating events and envision an optimistic view of healthy, robust, sustainable, smart, agile, peaceful communities.”
The awards, which recognize not just research and development, but also the application of AM technology to production, were presented Sept. 13 at RAPID + TCT 2021, North America’s largest additive manufacturing event, at Chicago’s McCormick Place.
