The Conestoga College Student Chapter of the Canadian Welding Association hosted a special event for students to learn about laser welding.
Dr. Joe Berkmanns, national technical manager of Linde Canada, updated students on recent developments in laser welding and related technologies. Berkmanns has extensive experience with high powered laser technology and laser welding/material processing research at the Frauhofer Institute in Aachen, Germany.
His presentation focused on developments in CO2 and solid state lasers for applications including welding, cutting, brazing and additive manufacturing.
Approximately half of the 85 attendees were current students from the Manufacturing Engineering Technology Welding & Robotics program or the Welding Engineer Technology Inspection program. Several practicing professionals in manufacturing also attended the seminar.
The presentation focused on the market for laser welding and covered the basics of the laser welding process, power source development and the impact on the laser welding process, welding systems and beam delivery, process variations and quality assurance process control options.
