There’s a lot of talk these days about the need for Canada to educate more skilled tradespeople, and the role that individual businesses can play. The criticism is often that business doesn’t invest enough, but part of the problem is that they don’t know how to proceed. Assessment, after all, is crucial, yet metalworking shops have varying degrees of competency.

Haas Automation, a long time supporter of the Skills Competitions in Canada, donated $50,000 to the Ontario Technological Skills organization to support ongoing training for skilled trades. The donation came through the Gene Haas Foundation, which supports skills training in North America.

Most companies set their cost targets based on what they’ve done already. There are two problems with this: first, it limits opportunity for improvement; and second, it doesn’t help much with new jobs. As the saying goes: if you look in the rear view mirror, you might drive off a cliff.
