Eduardo Martin is the new president of Market Area Americas (MAA) for Sandvik Coromant, Fair Lawn, NJ. The MAA region includes Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico and the US. He previously lead Sandvik Coromant in Italy and succeeds John Israelsson, who is now the president of Sandvik Hyperion. Martin began his career with Sandvik more than 25 years ago and started as a machinist.

Kennametal and Sumitomo Electric have signed a licensing agreement under which Sumitomo Electric will provide and support Kennametal's new and advanced KM4X spindle connection solution to Sumitomo Electric customers globally. Sumitomo Electric is a supplier of electric wire, optical fibers and cutting tool products.

The Canadian manufacturing continues to grow, hitting the highest level in 2.5 years in October, according to the RBC Canadian Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI). The PMI is a monthy survey that serves as a gauge of manufacturing business conditions. 

After adjusting for seasonal variation, the RBC PMI - a composite indicator designed to provide a single-figure snapshot of the health of the manufacturing sector - rose to its highest level in 30 months during October. At 55.6, up from 54.2 in September and above the series average of 53.3, the RBC PMI indicated a strong improvement in Canadian manufacturing operation conditions.

This recent development by the American Chemical Society is an example of advancements in welding and one reason why Dan Tadic, executive director of the Canadian Welding Association, a division of the Canadian Welding Bureau, is excited about the launch of the CWA Foundation, geared to educating the next generation of welders.

The Canadian metal fabrication and welding industry will be the economic comeback kid in 2017 because of an expected resurgence in steel processing in Canada, coupled with a depreciated dollar and an improving US economy.

That's the positive outlook presented by two speakers at the Canadian Welding Association's CanWeld Conference, held October 28-29 in Niagara Falls, ON.

Weldco Beals, Edmonton, ON, was the recipient of the Canadian Welding Association's (CWA) Productivity Award. CWA presented the award to the Doug Schindel, president of Weldco Companies. The award recognizes a company that has made an investment to increase efficiencies and productivity of its operations.
