Manufacturing sales rolse 1.1 per cent to a record high of $54.4 billion in April. The icrease was due mainly to higher sales in the petroleum and coal product, and primary metal industries, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada.

The Federal government, via the Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED) is investing close to $1.5 million in two Quebec manufacturing companies to help supoort 225 jobs and the creation of an additional 40 jobs.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says if the Conservatives are re-elected, the government will create a $100 million Manufacturing Technology Demonstration Fund to support projects in advanced manufacturing. Harper's election promise is the latest in a slew of promises from federal party leaders about how they plan to support manufacturing in Canada if their respective governments are elected.

Alta Precision, a Montreal machine shop serving the aerospace manufacturing industry, has doubled its operation to meet growing demand. The modernized $11 million project has seen the CNC manufacturing business go from 40,000 sq ft to 80,000 sq ft. The company held an inauguration on June 21. Alta Precision will be featured in Shop Metalworking Technology's upcoming August issue.

Two Windsor manufacturers are the latest recipients in a recent slew of funding announcements by the Federal government. Newmak of Canada Corp. in partnership with Arbec Tool and Machine Ltd., both based in Windsor, ON, have received funding of up to $3 million to support development of stronger engine blocks made of lightweight aluminum.

A Swedish additive manufacturing company is investing $31 million in a new automated facility in Broisbriand, QC, that will create 106 new jobs over the next three years. Advanced Powders & Coatings (AP&C), a subsidiary of Arcam AB, made the announcement at the Farnborough International Airshow.

BC high schools with welding programs are getting a $300,000 boost after the Canadian Welding Association Foundation (CWA Foundation) announced it's expanding secondary school welding and education support programs across the province because of a donation from the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation in conjunction with Seaspan, an association of Canadian companies in the coastal marine transportation and shipbuilding sectors.

The CWA Foundation and the Marinucci Family Foundation plan to donate $500,000 to high school welding programs in Canada. Each secondary school will receive $5,000 annually over ten years. CWA made the annoucnement at the CanWeld Conference in St. John's, NL. At the same time, the CWA Foundation plans to establish a welding program at a secondary school in Newfoundland.
